Bit.Trip Fate is an arcade-style scrolling shooter music game created by Gaijin Games and distributed by Aksys Games for the Wii’s WiiWare download service. Bit.Trip Fate is separated into three settings, each of which has two levels and culminates in a boss confrontation. The first setting (stages Determination and Patience) is reminiscent of a crystal cavern over a space background, the second (stages Desperation and Frustration) is reminiscent of a metropolis packed with skyscrapers, and the third (stages Anger and Fall) is reminiscent of an underground pit with rivers of lava.
The hybrid mechanics of the game incorporate a side view, similar to a horizontal shooter, but with Commander Video limited to a predefined route called the Vibe (along which he may freely travel forward and backward), similar to rail shooters. Furthermore, the user controls Commander Video’s mobility independently of his aiming reticule, in the manner of Robotron: 2084-type twin-stick games. The reticule is controlled by the IR pointer on the Wii Remote, with bullets flying radially from Commander Video’s position.
When the player is not holding down the trigger button, movement along the rail is quicker. The stage determines the form of the rail, which is generally comparable to a sine wave, while the screen scrolls at a constant velocity. Enemies charge in all directions, shooting patterned and targeted shots in the style of shoot ’em ups.
