Overview The Backrooms: Mass Extinction
If you’re not careful and you end up “noclipping” out of reality in the wrong spots, you might find yourself in the Backrooms. Picture it: old, damp carpet, yellow rooms that never end, and the constant buzzing of fluorescent lights. This is the only thing that will keep you company in this never-ending, lonely place. Don’t bother calling for help—there’s no one left to hear you. You may also like to download The New Apartment.
Some VR headsets might have issues. I haven’t tested all of them yet. Tested headsets include the Oculus Rift and Meta Quest 2. If you’re using the Quest, go into your Oculus app and change the OpenXR settings to the Oculus one. There’s a bug in the new Unreal Engine update that messes up the headset display if you don’t change it.
In the Backrooms: Mass Extinction is a game made by Mitchell Hepburn using Unreal Engine 5. It is still being developed so there will be updates with new content and improvements. The Beta version just came out. Right now, you can explore Level 0, a huge maze of rooms that stretch on forever. You can also check out Level 0.2, a sub-level called ‘Remodeled Mess.’ There’s Level A, also known as the Poolrooms, and Level 0.3, called Level Fun, where the Partygoers hang out. So you can explore Negative Levels and different sub levels of The Backrooms.
To survive you can use vending machines to get food and drinks. You can collect items like Almond Water, use a flashlight to light up dark areas, but make sure you have enough batteries. You can search for the Manila Room, which you can find by noclipping through a wall. There are books to explain more about the levels, and you can play on Desktop or VR and switch between the two easily. You can interact with water in the Poolrooms in both VR and regular play modes and even splash the water with your VR controller.
So you can collect items for your inventory and find hidden weapons to defend yourself from enemies. In the game has three enemy types: Partygoers Smilers and Hazmat entities. You can turn off enemies if you don’t want them around, and there are options to play with guns for protection. In the game also has difficulty settings to make it easier or harder depending on how you want to play.
So let me know if this works better!
