The game board represents the mansion, which is divided into different rooms. Each player takes on the role of a character, each with their own unique personality and background. The characters include the wealthy Mr. Boddy and six guests: Miss Scarlett, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. White, Reverend Green, Mrs. Peacock, and Professor Plum. Each character moves around the mansion to gather clues and eventually deduce the three main elements of the mystery: the murderer, the murder weapon, and the room where the crime took place.
At the start of the game, the three main components of the mystery are randomly selected and placed into a sealed envelope. These are the facts that players must discover through a process of elimination. The rest of the cards, representing suspects, weapons, and rooms, are shuffled and distributed among the players.
On their turn, players roll dice and move their characters around the mansion. They can enter different rooms and make suggestions about the murderer, weapon, and room to other players in the same room. The suggested cards are discreetly shown to the suggesting player, helping them narrow down the possibilities.
The game also features a “Clue Sheet” that players use to track the clues and cross-off possibilities, helping them organize the information and make more accurate deductions. As players gather more information, they become better equipped to make their final accusations.
The game intensifies as players strive to be the first to make an accusation. However, if a player makes a wrong accusation, they are eliminated from the game, and they can no longer participate in making further suggestions or accusations.
The game continues until one player successfully makes an accusation that matches the three elements in the envelope. This player is declared the winner and becomes the master sleuth who solved the mystery.
